01. The Challenge and The Fundamental approaches
The biggest challenge in this project was that the house, although detached, was completely surrounded on all four sides by tall buildings. Our goal was to create a landscape design so effective that it would offer the homeowners complete privacy—allowing them to use their garden comfortably and with ease.
02. The implementations and The Solution
Although it was a detached house, it had a large, four-story structure with wide indoor living areas. In contrast, the garden was quite small. Our challenge was to create the feeling of a spacious landscape despite the limited outdoor area.
- We needed to create a parking area in front of the house, but we wanted to avoid a harsh, overly paved look. To achieve this, we used a grass-jointed paving design—resulting in a strong yet green and visually appealing parking solution.
- The main entrance of the house and the garden entrance were positioned at different angles. We resolved this contrast through a well-designed entry path that was both decorative and highly functional.
- In small spaces, we used fewer plants and added modest lawn areas to create a sense of openness and spaciousness.
- The backyard was located at a much lower level than the front yard, accessed by a narrow path and a staircase of 16 steps. Despite the small size of the front yard, we solved the design challenge with a smart and elegant layout.
- We also transformed the backyard into a spacious and open-feeling landscape. This allowed the patio area to become a peaceful retreat—giving the homeowners the feeling of sitting right in the heart of nature.
- We strengthened our design with durable, long-lasting galvanized steel edging—laying the foundation for sustainable and easy-to-maintain landscape areas.
- An automatic irrigation system with a built-in rain sensor was installed to simplify maintenance and ensure water efficiency.
- This feature not only makes maintenance easier, but also promotes responsible water use and long-term environmental care.
- To prevent weed growth, we placed jute under the plants and topped it with lava rock. For certain level differences, we used wooden structures as a natural solution.
- We planted tall, evergreen species around the perimeter to ensure year-round privacy and greenery.
- We considered every detail, from the warm fall colors of golden-orange trees to the cheerful blossoms of spring-flowering trees.
- We designed a sustainable garden that reflects the beauty and colors of all four seasons—bringing a sense of joy, warmth, and vibrant life throughout the year.
03. The Result
This garden was designed as a meaningful outdoor space where the homeowner could relax with their two young children and unwind after a busy day. Located in the heart of the city, it offers a peaceful escape from the dense urban surroundings and constant noise of traffic. Every detail was thoughtfully considered, with carefully selected materials and visually rich design solutions—creating a landscape that serves the family to its fullest potential.
