The garden had three neighbors, and there were significant elevation differences between all three gardens. Especially with the neighbor in the back garden, there was a very steep elevation difference. The slope between their garden and this one was so dramatic that it destroyed a large part of the garden. On the left side, there were elevation differences with the neighbor in varying degrees, and there were meaningless mounds between the two gardens. With the other neighbor, there was only a small elevation difference. They loved having a large lawn, but they didn't have a flat lawn. In the end, it turned out to be a wonderful garden.

01. The Challenge and The Fundamental approaches

They had seen a couple of gardens we previously worked on and liked them very much, so they wanted to work with us. We visited the house's garden, observed it, took measurements, made assessments, and evaluated the space. Then, we created a rough sketch of the design, explained our ideas, and showed them. We also discussed what needed to be done, including the correct design and applications. They really liked our ideas and assessments. As a result, we removed their existing garden and completely rebuilt it from scratch.Their garden had been redone or revised three times before, and they hadn't been able to achieve the desired results in any of those attempts, so they had some doubts. However, when they saw the high-quality work we had done previously, as well as our assessments and analysis, their doubts were completely eliminated, and we immediately started the project. Because they had seen the quality of our previous craftsmanship, aesthetic designs, and low-maintenance, sustainable gardens, it was easy for them to trust us. Of course, our passion for our profession, experience, expertise, and meticulous work ethic are clearly visible in the projects we deliver. This foundation allows us to make every project more enjoyable and successful.

  • Our main principle for this garden was to create a flat, wide, and spacious lawn despite the sloped areas caused by the elevation differences with the three neighboring gardens.
  • Especially, the goal was to solve the very high elevation difference in the back garden by turning it into a visual solution
  • The goal was to clearly separate the garden from the neighboring gardens without using tall and obstructive plants, while also avoiding darkening or narrowing the space.
  • Designing a state-of-the-art irrigation system, of course, taking into account the water needs of the plants and the garden's sun exposure,
  • Creating a lighting system,
  • Providing maintenance, pruning, fertilization, and pest control for the existing trees ,
  • Designing the garden as harmoniously as possible with nature,
  • Ensuring its sustainability,
  • Creating a low-maintenance garden,
  • Creating a garden that they can enjoy for years by only maintaining it and supporting it with seasonal flowers to add color throughout the seasons.
  • Our client wants the lawn area to be as large as possible, desires to plant seasonal flowers every year, even if it's just a small amount, but does not want the seasonal flowers to be too many. They want color in the garden.
02. The implementations and The Solution

In general, in all my designs and applications, I choose my materials from natural resources as much as possible, unless absolutely necessary. Natural woods, natural stones, natural ground cover materials, and of course, plants. Here, we solved our most important issue once again with wood. Our observations and the client's requests aligned so perfectly that our client said, 'I don't need to say anything.' They added, 'I’m sure the end result will be great,' and we started the work.

  • We created terraces with wood to address the high elevation difference. The area became very clear and level. We prevented soil erosion, were able to plant the desired plants, and achieved the desired elevation for a flat lawn. The entire uneven and neglected appearance of the garden took on a whole new dimension,
  • When we started the garden, the soil quality was incredibly poor. Therefore, we removed the worst parts of the soil from the area. We then calculated the required soil characteristics and depth for a good lawn, brought it to the area, compacted it, and spread it. While doing this, we also established the necessary infrastructure for irrigation and lighting. The soil, or the base infrastructure, is one of the most important aspects of landscaping applications. Although it wasn’t necessary here, in some cases, we install or modify drainage systems. Drainage for both the building and the garden is a very important solution,
  • There were already large and old plants in the area. We preserved them and added new plant species. We selected those that do not grow too large and are long-lasting. Since the overall location of the garden is quite shady, we primarily chose plants that thrive in shade. My general principle for plant applications is that if I am using dense plant groups, I always separate them from the lawn with a divider. The dividers can vary depending on the garden's needs, design, or the client's requirements, but I prefer them to be discreet and not draw attention. The plants and grass should stand out, and the dividers should prevent them from mixing without being overly noticeable. Here, we mainly used plants along the edges and in the terraced areas, which allowed us to create large, desired lawn areas,
  • We set the lighting to operate in 4 different categories. If we want, all lights can turn on simultaneously, or we can have a more sparse lighting setup with lights turning on intermittently. Alternatively, we can choose to light only the backyard or just the side garden. The lighting was selected and installed as low-level lights among the plants. It can also be controlled via an automatic remote or an app downloaded to a phone,
  • We installed the irrigation system with a rain sensor to ensure water conservation. Since I always enjoy keeping up with technology, the system can be adjusted and modified at any time through an app downloaded to the phone, no matter where we are,

  • For weed control, reducing maintenance costs, water conservation, and ensuring that the garden looks well-maintained and beautiful for long periods, it is very beneficial to cover the soil areas outside of the lawn with natural stones and natural mulch materials. I don't like leaving open soil areas exposed. Gardens should always look well-maintained.
03. The Result

The garden turned out to be one that our client was very satisfied with and became a reference for many others. They achieved the garden they wanted: easy to maintain, beautiful, and spacious with a well-defined and neat layout. The separation from the neighbors’ gardens was very clear, but without being too abrupt or aggressive. The garden looked very spacious. We preserved all of their old trees. One or two of the trees couldn’t be positioned to improve the quality of the lawn, but we resolved this with a very soft leveling technique. It became a sustainable, easy-to-maintain garden that minimizes water usage, allowing for the enjoyment of all four seasons while making a significant impact—a truly elite garden.
