01. The Challenge and The Fundamental approaches

At the Rotary Club I am a member of, we wanted to make a positive impact on the community around us. Since I work in the field of environmental design, I was involved in the environmental aspect within the Rotary Club. We wanted to create a park where people with disabilities, including children, could use it just as comfortably as anyone else.Of course, we didn't have a site to build the park on. First, we went to the municipality of the neighborhood we had in mind. We told them, as the Rotary Club, that we wanted to create an accessible park. The municipality agreed to provide us with the land, and we would handle the entire project and construction. The municipality was very pleased with this. They showed us a site, and as a landscape architect, I designed all the landscaping, planting, irrigation, and electrical projects. Both the municipality and our club were very impressed. In fact, the Rotary Center even offered significant funding and grant support for the construction. However, shortly after, an earthquake occurred in our country. Projects like this were delayed, and relief efforts for the earthquake began

The most challenging aspects of this project were:

First, I had to really like the project myself,

It wasn't a commercial project; it was a labor of love. And I had to do my best,

Cost was very important. If the budget was too high, it might not have been possible to complete the project,

It had to be functional, sustainable, and aesthetic,

The area they gave us was two small pieces, not a single piece,

One part of the area was an incredibly steep slope,

Our main goal was to create a park that could be accessed and used by people with disabilities. However, since a large part of the area was very steep, it limited the space we could use for this purpose. Nevertheless, our aim was to design a park that everyone could use, so we developed the design accordingly.

02. The implementations and The Solution

We created wooden steps on the steep area, which not only allowed us to plant a lot of greenery but also provided us with ample seating areas. The steps also created a passage from the upper street to the lower street. The use of wood for the steps added a natural and soft aesthetic to the area, which is otherwise surrounded by dense buildings. In the flatter areas, we were able to create designs that were closer to our main goal.

  • Our goal was to generate electricity using a solar-powered seating area roof. We wanted people who visited the park to benefit from this energy if needed. Actually, our main objective here was to raise awareness, especially among the children visiting the park, about generating electricity from solar energy.
  • Additionally, we designed a large, colorful windmill in the park. The idea was to bring vibrancy to the park with the colors, while also educating children about wind energy and raising awareness. We demonstrated how we could generate electricity from the windmill right there,
  • Additionally, we designed a slide that children who use wheelchairs could slide down
  • We created spaces where adults using wheelchairs could easily place or park their chairs next to the seating areas."
  • We wanted to make it a bit easier for our visually impaired friends to walk along the paths, so we designed the paths with their needs in mind,
  • We placed a climbing area, which is one of the children’s favorite spots, on a part of the sloped area. It became both functional and allowed us to make the most of the sloped terrain in a very practical way,
  • The steepness of a large part of the area allowed us to create different levels and enjoyable spaces. We turned the steepness of the area into an advantage rather than a disadvantage.
03. Result
  • In the midst of dense buildings, this small space became a place where people could satisfy their longing for greenery, breathe, and where every child and adult in the area could go and use. It turned into a beautiful park design where children could both play joyfully and also gain a bit of awareness,
